Daily Kos was founded in 2002 as an alternative to legacy media parroting right-wing lies. Today, Facebook and other social media platforms want to decide which news stories get heard and prioritize right-wing content over progressive voices, as well as user-generated content over publishers. That means we can "beat the algorithm" by enlisting our community to post Daily Kos content and we can fight back by sharing Daily Kos petitions and promoting our community.
Today, I am writing to invite you to join the Daily Kos social media squad and to visit our new platform at social.dailykos.com. The Daily Kos social media squad is a special group of people on our email list who not only sign our petitions and send letters to elected officials to demand progressive change, but who also share these actions on social media.
Click here to visit social.dailykos.com and share our petitions on everything from holding Donald Trump accountable to passing gun safety reform to fighting climate change. Click here to sign up for the Daily Kos social media squad and receive regular updates.
Every week, we will update our page at social.dailykos.com with new social media content that is crucial to help promote our current progressive goals. By doing so, you will be doing more than just adding your name to a petition—you will multiply your impact.
Daily Kos petitions and their effect can only go so far through email and our website. In order to reach many more people who will take action, we need the energy of activists like you to share these actions on social media. This is how we allow our influence to grow organically.
But this is more than simply reposting and sharing our content. Social media platforms use an algorithm that rewards posts that get promoted by other users, creating a ripple effect that moves the boulder up the mountain. That's why members of the Daily Kos social media squad support each other by sharing and liking posts that others have shared.
On Facebook and Twitter, all of our re-shared posts have the hashtag #DailyKos that allows you to view which posts have been tweeted out. Besides sharing posts that we help generate for you, we also want you to spend a few minutes liking, commenting or sharing other peoples' posts—as a way of beating the algorithm. By visiting these links on Twitter and Facebook, you can see who else shared our content.
Our platform at social.dailykos.com allows you to repost Daily Kos petitions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp. When other social media platforms become available, we hope to be able to expand our reach there, too.
I get it. Facebook and Twitter are awful for many reasons, but the answer is not to simply disengage; Those social media platforms are where people are at, and we need to keep pushing out our content to improve our influence, fight disinformation, and push for a more progressive future. Please join us today.
